1980's

RANSOMSOUL

Saw this image and there was no way I could just let it slip without finding a home on the blog. I wasn't one of those kids carrying a Boombox on my shoulder bumping rap - I was one of those kids watching his dad carry it out of the car, blasting some Rick James as we walked into the park. There was a time while watching/experiencing this I wanted nothing more than to be able to hold that radio. It was as big as you can imagine and seemed to way 100 pounds as my fathers arms would be tight carrying it along. It didn't happen often but every once in a while when I knew my father wouldn't be home for several hours, I would do the unthinkable - I would find a mix tape with my favorite songs (usually Prince), drop it in the radio and take a really really fast walk around the block. To have music on the go now is such a simple pleasure because it's just so easy with IPods. However back then it wasn't so easy, so those times in the 80's, feeling that 'Cool' of jamming as you walk, has to rank of some of my most enjoyable moments as a kid.

BACK FROM CHI-TOWN...WAS I MISSED?

RANSOMSOUL

Too tired to think now but I'll give a recap of some highlights worth sharing tomorrow. The house was super clean when I walked in and so once again it proves that I'm the one that makes the messes. How is that possible with 4 kids? I'll have to look for those answers in my sleep tonight.

DON'T FEEL SO GOOD

RANSOMSOUL

The show will go on but it looks like Matisse has found a way to break my protective barrier and infect me with some baby sickness. In a classic turnaround, he seems to be feeling all the better and has even begun to have an extra pep in his step. Claudia is already preparing to receive this special feeling in the days to come. However, I'm sure she will find a way to accomplish twice as much as I will during the same weak period.

I WANT MY MTV

The experiment continues in the Ransom household... We have managed to complete 30 days & counting without turning on the TV. It helps that we actually put a freeze on Direct TV, so even if someone where to turn the TV on, it would just show a beautiful shade of black. Back when we first mounted our gorgeous state-of-the art plasma TV over the fire place, I remember people saying that it looked like art... that is about all it currently symbolizes. For those that don't know this whole project came about, it started because I felt that we as a family could be doing a lot more with our free time.

RANSOMSOUL

Taking the lead, I've been spending some nice quality time with Rosetta Stone and I'm almost ready for my German commercial endorsement. Claudia, who has never really been a TV person, hasn't even skipped a beat - of course this is not including her constantly asking if there is a way for me to get a hold of the American Idol shows. They say it takes 12 days to form a habit and so it comes as no surprise that the kids haven't even asked about TV. There has been a mention or two to 'put on a movie' for them on the long weekends and we've had some 'magical' movie moments. My parents are concerned with this progression of change - there was push back with the whole vegetarian thing but now with no TV, it's becoming increasingly difficult to get them to come over. Now that I think about it, we haven't had a visitor of any kind in about a month... Coincidence? I don't think so.

MAKES IT LOOK EASY

RANSOMSOUL

With the size of our family you tend to hear 'How Do You Guys Do It???'. We usually answer with the classics like "We Have Really Good Kids' or 'Four Is Not That Much More Work Than Three'. If you let the dust settle, you'll find that one key reason we're able to make this machine run, is the incredible help from each kid. However, none more deserving of a highlight than Kiana. She is asked in so many ways to become a 'Pro Helper'. Her efforts could fall in line with other sweet kids, but it's that she does it with little to no complaints. No one has benefited from these efforts more than Matisse (well maybe Claudia & Me). This is something that Matisse can only show appreciation through smiles & kisses now, but soon Kiana will be able to hear those words that make it all worth it like 'I wov you'.
